I have continually tried sushi and absolutely hated it each and every time. I've been to a number of upscale sushi places that claim to have top quality sushi and have the praise of trust worthy friends. Each time I quickly became utterly disgusted by the texture and fishy taste of the sushi rolls and precede to order a bowl of edamame or tempura veggies and drown my sorrows in sake. I sadly had resigned to the fact that I am just not a super cool sushi person.
Then I moved to Austin, and folks, people in Austin really, really love Uchi. I mean they have the "I'm willing to wait hours and hours in a crowded lobby" kind of love for Uchi. I just never bought into the whole thing. I always thought the super strength love for Uchi was some sort of uber trendy hype. Now, I must openly admit that I was very, very wrong. Uchi is that good.
When I decided to visit Uchi, I already had it in my mind that I would be a good sport and give things a try. I found solice in knowing that if things went sour I always had tempura. So I did just that, I let go of any control and let my friends decide what to order and I tried every single thing that landed on our table. It was awesome!
Beside eating rolls (my favorites the shag and zero sen), I actually ate straight out raw fish and loved it. This is the most surprising turn of events. I don't even really like cooked fish, much less raw fish. This really blew my mind. My favorite concoctions, of the raw fish variety, were the hama chili and the maguro sashimi with goat cheese. Each were out of this world, maybe even better than the rolls.
So I suppose the moral of this review is, if you don't like sushi give Uchi a try before making your final judgement. It is definitely live up to all the hype and is worth every dollar you spend. (which can quickly turn out to be a whole lot of dollars so be very careful)

ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean! I was like that up until college. I wanted to be cool and trendy like everyone yet I couldn't shake the squishy texture. I finally got over it and I now LOVE sushi!
